Real Estate Developer Has a Change of Heart, Preserves Local Landmark

CORTLAND, OH — What was once expected to be another redevelopment project has turned into something much different at Monty’s by the Lake.

Local real estate investor and business owner Spensir Chappell originally purchased the property with plans to convert the restaurant into an Airbnb. But after meeting longtime owner Mary — who has since stepped into the role of general manager — and learning about the deep history behind the establishment, those plans quickly changed.

Instead of removing the restaurant, Chappell made the decision to preserve it.

“After hearing the stories and seeing what this place meant to people, it didn’t feel right to take that away,” Chappell said. “Some places you don’t replace — you take care of them.”

Monty’s by the Lake has long been a familiar spot for locals, known for its simple, comforting food and small-town atmosphere. With Mary still involved in day-to-day operations, the goal is to maintain that nostalgic feel while making necessary improvements behind the scenes.

“We’re not trying to reinvent it,” Chappell added. “We’re just making sure it’s here for the next generation.”

The restaurant is now back open with updated hours and a renewed focus on quality and consistency.
